I hope that this thread is helpful for others experiencing troubles with Nvidia driver installation. I am marking the thread as even though there seems to be an open issue for at least some Cinnamon users. I suppose a bug report should be submitted but I'm afraid I don't have a lot of useful information for troubleshooting such as logs. So the bad news is that there seems to be an issue between the Nvidia driver(s) and Cinnamon. While I do prefer the aesthetics of the Cinnamon desktop over MATE, I am very happy with MATE and will probably not make any changes.

Then I remembered that different editions of Mint were available so I downloaded the iso for MATE and successfully installed it. I installed Ubuntu 14.10 but very quickly realized that Mint was the distro I wanted.

I determined that the only way forward was to install MATE instead of Cinnamon based on another thread I found were someone was having issues using Cinnamon with Nvidia driver - since this person was using a different distro I figured that my best bet was to try a different distro / desktop. (2) I tried to install the driver 343.36 per Nvidia's instructions using the following command to stop x server: (1) I tried to install the driver "nvidia-current" and associated application "nvidia-settings" using the Synaptic Package Manager but uninstalled it pretty much right away since it is a recently released GPU and none of the files listed indicated newest Nvidia driver version numbers - I did not reboot the computer before removing the just installed driver and application but suspect that the problem would have manifested itself upon reboot GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 OC part number GV-N970IXOC-4GDĮverything was fine until I attempted to install the Nvidia driver: SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s

Also, I have deleted some of what I will call conjecture or guesses as to what needs to be done since I don't believe these comments will be helpful to anyone with similar issues. Looking back at my posts it seems in some cases a few more details would be helpful to whomever has similar problems or will be working on a solution so these have been added. While my problem has been solved (see below), a problem seems to persist between Cinnamon 2.4, Nvidia driver 343.36 (perhaps others as well) and my GTX 970 graphics card. Understanding this allowed me to do more troubleshooting and to give Cinnamon another try or two! I am happy to report that everythings is now working properly. So it turns out my problem had not been completely solved since there was no hardware acceleration going on! I gather Cinnamon requires hardware acceleration so while things looked fine in MATE, in fact there was still work to do.
