You can do this daily or on any schedule that works for you. You can have as many accounts as you wish, and for as many people as you wish.Īfter you set up your checking, savings, credit-card and investment accounts, you click on “ update” and enter a master password, and all the cleared transactions flow into Quicken. You then assign each transaction a category, such as “net income.” Quicken will remember future, similar transactions for you.

Once the connection is made, you can update the account by importing all the transactions. Give the account a name and let Quicken connect you to the bank using your usual login and password. If you’re new to Quicken, a tutorial will help you set up accounts, categories such as “charity” and the basics of a budget. For home use, Quicken is a better choice. Unlike Quicken, it has a steep learning curve and costs more. There also is a version for property owners and managers ($165).Īnother alternative is QuickBooks, a more expensive and complicated way to handle finances.

The Premier version ($105) has all the features of the other versions, plus help with investments. The Deluxe version ($75) will help you plan for college expenses for your children and even for retirement. Other versions will import files from previous versions of Quicken and display all your banking and investment accounts. Because you probably will use the standard deduction on your tax return, there’s little reason to get a more expensive version, unless you have high medical or other expenses. You can keep track of your financial accounts, categorize them and make (and try to keep) budgets. If you file the 1040EZ tax return, you’ll probably be happy with the Starter Edition for $40. Instead of relying on paper bills to remind you when one is due, you can have one of thousands of utilities, credit-card companies and other payees send you a reminder, and you can pay the bill directly through Quicken. It’s hard to imagine Quicken getting any better, but the 2016 version I bought, Quicken Home & Business ($115), has new features that make paying bills even more of a no-brainer.

If you have 15 minutes a week to download transactions from your bank, credit-card companies and investments, come tax time, which is coming soon, you’ll be one happy junior accountant. It’s the best, most accurate and most efficient way to keep track of income and expenses that I’ve found. I chant arias of praise for Quicken each season. This works great the first week of January, but not so well the second week, when you decide it’s too much trouble. More organized spenders will stash receipts and checks in separate envelopes according to budget categories.
